- Cãmara de filmar, de frente para a TV (LCD ou plasma, porque se for uma TV antiga de raios catódicos, provávelmente, a câmara vai filmar o refreshing horizontal a cada x segundos)

- DVD de sala, que tenha a hipótese de gravar directamente o que se passa na TV

- Placa de vídeo "especial" no PC que grave a informação

Downconversion is stepped to fixed compression levels - the 4 episodes I mentioned above were recompressed from HQ to HSP (1.5gb to 1gb) there is no sliding scale that maximise use of the DVD - in this case I ended up with 1/2 gig spare on the DVD that could have been used if it had more variable compression parameters. A big bonus is the up sampling of input signals to component video outputs - very useful here in NZ where the best SKY output is RGB scart and my TV has only component inputs. Chasing play, pause TV, record to HDD and watch another DVD or something else recorded to HDD all work very well. Remote is OK, but not illuminated and the record button is hidden behind a sliding panel - stops accidental activation I suppose. All in All very happy, some minor quibbles (and they really are minor) 9/10. It works as you expect it should - very intuitive. The dropped point is for the layer change which will stop me using it as my main playback machine and the lack of variable compression.

Only if you have a very good video capture card. Your pc's dvi
connections, are you sure those are inputs? If one of them is an input,
it may just be useful for video passthrough. Using a pc to capture the
video and encode it to a file is a whole nuther ball of wax. Most pc's
can't do it.

For capture of high quality video, you need accelerated capture cards
that do the encoding themselves, instead of making the pc do it. These
cost maybe $100 to $200, same as a dvd recorder, which have the same
sort of encoding hardware. It's a bandwidth-intense process, just like
video output is. For the same reason you only get good graphics with a
high-bandwidth Nvidia or ATI video card, you also only get quality
capture with a high-bandwidth capture card. And pc's, even if they have
multithreaded dual or quad cores, lots of RAM, plenty of caceh memory,
high clock speeds, etc, are not high-bandwidth enough for the task, not
by a long shot. A video card usually has several times the flops
capacity as the entire rest of the pc.

Check your specific model of video card and see if it has
hardware-accelerated capture. If not, forget DVI. You're never gonna
get high quality capture at HD resolutions. Consider a 480i normal
screen: 640x240. A 720p screen is 1280x720, that is 6 times as many
pixels on every frame. If your pc is having trouble with the SD res, it
will have even more trouble with HD.

There's lots of stuff you can do to try to improve capture at SD
resolutions. First shut down all the running processes that aren't
necessary and eat up your cpu's bandwidth. Then open your capture
software and try different formats and codecs, and framerates. It may
capture more quickly to mjpeg or quicktime than to div-x. Try reducing
the quality of the frame captures to 80 or 90 percent. If there's an
option for "capture every frame" turn it off and let the pc capture
what frames it can instead.

Another thing you could do is downscale the video before capture. If
you take a 640x480 interlaced picture, and reduce its window to 320x240
to shrink it, it will be only 1/4 as many pixels, and will greatly
improve capture performance. 320x240 still looks good on youtube.

Capture of HD is something you'll need a pro level card for though.
Also you have to deal with HDCP protection if you're using DVI.

One other thing: I have linux on my ps3, my pc also uses linux, and I
compared the two using remote desktop and video capture software. Using
the same game I first accessed my ps3's desktop on my pc, started the
game, and recorded the video to file. Then I did the same on my ps3.
The ps3 captures video better than my pc does, due to its higher
bandwidth processors. Unfortunately, neither does what a capture card
can, they can't capture any 3d games.
