Thousands of businesses and major websites hit by cloud outage
- 75million gamers affected as PS Network drops out, and the problem won't be fixed for a 'day or two'
It's supposed to be the cheap and safe way for internet-based companies to outsource data.
But
Amazon's much-vaunted cloud network took a big hit yesterday when it
crashed, taking a host of web 2.0 companies - including Reddit, Quora,
and Hootsuite - down with it.The rare phenomenon came on the same
day as the massive PlayStation network went offline after an
unexplained outage, which officials say could take another day or two to
put right.

Embarrassing apology: Location-based service
SCVNGR, one of the sites affected by the by Amazon's network cloud
outage, tweeting an apology to users
Sites across the U.S. went offline for up to 12 hours yesterday as
Amazon's northern Virginia data centre was hit by a series of outages. The centre is one of five that supports its huge EC2 network, an elastic cloud computing service.

Thousands
of businesses use the cloud to store their data, and it hosts a number
of U.S. websites, including location-based website Four Square, news
aggregator Reddit and Twitter client Hootsuite, which all went down for
periods yesterday. One location-based service, SCVNGR, tweeted:
'The sky is falling! Amazon's cloud seems to be down (raining?) so we're
experiencing some issues too. Be back soon!'

Crashed: Four Square and a number of other social media sites hosted by Amazon's cloud were also forced to post apology notices

A most vexing question: Q&A site Quora was ironically left with the greatest puzzle of all - why its site was down
Question and answer site Quora posted: 'We'll be back shortly, we hope. Sorry - it sucks for
us too. We'd point fingers, but we wouldn't be where we are today
without EC2.'
And Hootsuite posted a 'homepage down' message reading: 'Owls need a break sometimes too. We'll be back in action shortly - in
the meantime go outside and flap your arms around, you may find that
flying ain't very easy.'
The outages began Thursday morning just before 5am New York
time. According to Amazon, an early-morning 'networking event' caused a
cascade of problems.EC2 is designed to cope with giant traffic spikes, of the type Amazon experiences during its pre-Christmas rush in December.
But this morning the company said a networking glitch made its
storage volumes automatically create back-ups of themselves, filling up
storage capacity and causing connectivity issues.

'A black eye': Thursday's outage was described as an embarrassment to Amazon

Game off: The PlayStation Network, which allows
gamers to play online was down all day Thursday and predicted it would
be offline on Friday
Ten hours after the cloud first went down, it wrote: 'A number of
people have asked us for an ETA on when we'll be fully recovered.
'Our high-level ballpark right now is that the ETA is a few hours.
We can assure you that all-hands are on deck to recover as quickly as
possible.' After 12 hours, the problem was fixed in all but one U.S. zone.Amazon's
famously large server capacity is said to be impossible to crash, after
attempts by the group 'Anonymous' tried to take it down in December. But the outage is likely to shake clients' faith in the cloud computing service, billed as a safe and reliable tool.
'Thank you very much for
your patience while we work to resolve this matter. Please stay tuned to
this space for more details, and we’ll update you again as soon as we
can'
Jason Glassberg, an online security expert, told CNN the affair was 'a big ol' black eye' for Amazon.
He
said: 'He said: 'Amazon has worked long and hard to convince folks that
their services were robust. This does not help the cause.'
Meanwhile 75million gamers were left frustrated after the PlayStation Network went down.
The outage, which is not believed to be connected to the Amazon problem, began at 9.30pm on Wednesday night. The
following morning, Patrick Seybold, the senior director of corporate
communications and social media, wrote on the company's blog: 'While we
are investigating the cause of the Network outage, we wanted to alert
you that it may be a full day or two before we’re able to get the
service completely back up and running. 'Thank you very much for
your patience while we work to resolve this matter. Please stay tuned to
this space for more details, and we’ll update you again as soon as we
can.'It's the latest in a string of problems for the network,
which went down several times at the end of February and suffered
outages throughout March.Furious gamers left comments including 'I hope it's not related to those hackers. This has got to stop!'The
message referred to an attack by hacking outfit Anonymous - the same
group which tried to take down Amazon last year - following Sony's
lawsuit against another hacker, George Hotz. But in a post on its
Facebook page today, Anonymous wrote: 'ATTENTION: For everyone coming
here complaining about the PSN or inquiring about it, We Do Not Know
What Happened. This is not the work of Anonymous.'
