Up Close And Personal - The Brutal Melee System1/Jul/2010 - by Victor Zuylen

Picture this: You're running across the roof of a Helghast control
tower, sniper rifle in hand, hoping to get a bead on the enemy convoy
below. You duck behind a malfunctioning ventilation unit, only to find
yourself eye-to-goggled-eye with the Helghast guard assigned to fix it.

You stare at each other awkwardly for a split second, weighing your
options. The sniper rifle is too unwieldy at this short range, and your
trusty M82 ran out of ammunition ages ago. You consider your sidearm,
securely strapped in your thigh holster, but the guard is already
drawing his own pistol. What do you do?
It's a question Sev has faced many times during his tour on Helghan.
Thankfully, extensive ISA close-quarters combat training has provided
him with a fitting response. Using a combination of swift kicks and
blows from his rifle butt, Sev can drop almost any adversary in seconds -
and for those still standing, he keeps an M32 combat knife in a
quick-draw sheath on his back.
Killzone 2 previously saw players using their rifles as blunt force
weapons in hand-to-hand fights, but the new 'Brutal Melee System' in
Killzone 3 takes close-quarters combat to a whole new level. It allows
players to execute fluid, context-sensitive close-quarters combos
(consisting of kicks, punches and stabs) on an opponent using
well-timed button presses.
The system can be used as a strictly last-ditch measure, or adopted
into a more "run 'n' gun" style of play. Aside from adding more variety
and flexibility to the gameplay, the context-sensitive nature of the
system also means that close-quarters battles rarely unfold in the same
way twice. Surroundings, angle of approach and enemy alertness all
factor into the way Sev dispatches of his enemies.
The outcome, however, is usually quite bloody - and in that regard, the
Brutal Melee System is definitely not for the squeamish. Sev has no
qualms about stabbing his knife through the goggles of a Helghast foe
and twisting the handle. Watch this demonstration of the Brutal Melee
System at your own peril, and let us know what you think in the
comments!

Killzone 3 at E3 2010 - The Awards2/Jul/2010 - by Victor Zuylen

By now you've had a few weeks to digest the enormous amount of news
about upcoming games and technologies presented at the Electronic
Entertainment Expo. Maybe you've even identified a number of standout
titles you're really looking forward to - like Killzone 3!

Well, you're not alone; various games websites have presented their E3
favorites, and it seems that Killzone 3 has left a sizeable impression.
Here, in no particular order, are the 'Best of E3' awards that we've
netted so far:
- GameSpot: Editors' Choice, Best
Shooter
"Killzone 3 seems to offer exactly what a great shooter
needs--constant action topped with more action."
- GameSpot: Editor's Choice, Best PS3
Game
"Killzone 3 is not only an impressive shooter, but it also
truly showcases the capabilities that the PlayStation 3 has to offer."
- GameTrailers: Best 3D Graphics
"More than any other 3D game at the show, Killzone 3 used the
technology for more than just visual effect."
And The Winner Is...
Killzone 3It wouldn't be a stretch to say that had Guerrilla Games shown off
Killzone 2 it would have given most games a run for their money in this
category. Now that Guerrilla has had over a year to make improvements
to the engine and even add in support for 3D tvs, Killzone 3 looks
fantastic. Insanely high textures, beautiful models and increased map
sizes with new and diverse environments make Killzone 3 a technical work
of art. Killzone had some tough competition in this category, but just
watching this game run seamlessly at such high fidelity makes it an
easy choice for winner of this category.
Nominees:
- Crysis 2 (Electronic Arts / Crytek)
- Dead Space 2 (Electronic Arts / Visceral Games)
- Gran Turismo 5 (SCEA / Polyphony Digital)
- Killzone 3 (SCEA / Guerrilla Games)
- Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (Electronic Arts / Criterion Games)
- Vanquish (SEGA / PlatinumGames)
- GamePro Australia: Best Use of 3D

check out this game."
