    Overview

The SENSE OF WONDER NIGHT (SOWN) is an event to discover new game
ideas that will catch people by surprise and give them a “Sense of
Wonder” — a sense that something will change in their world — right at
the instant of seeing or hearing the concept. It spotlights motivated
game developers by providing them with an opportunity to present their
    ideas and prototypes.
Last year, it received 67 entries from 14 countries and regions. 11
titles were selected for presentation, including 4 from outside Japan.
The audience of more than 500 people from 22 countries and regions
gathered for the presentations as well as for the concurrently-held
International Party. It was a truly international event and ended in a
    great success.
The SOWN 2009 office has begun inviting entries to SOWN 2009. Why
don’t you show your idea to the Tokyo Game Show audiences who come from
around the world? And we would like you to be inspired by other
presenters and audiences and find new experience and network at SOWN.

    • Organized by:
Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association / Nikkei Business Publications, Inc.
    • In cooperation with:

The Tokyo Game Show may not have as many big press conferences as E3 or even gamescom, but it does still have one, and when that one is Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai, you know it's going to be worth it one way or the other.

Which is why Eurogamer's over at TGS this week, as usual, and will be reporting live on Hirai's speech at 2.30am BST / 3.30am CET on Thursday, 24th September on this very page. That's 10.30am if you're in Japan, we're not just being weird (although with Ellie at the controls there will probably be weirdness anyway).

So what can we expect? Well, European Sony boss Andrew House hinted during gamescom that there will be a motion controller focus, while our own digging leads us to suspect the firm's 3D endeavours may be mentioned.

And hey, an update on Sony's Japanese productions, like Gran Turismo 5 and The Last Guardian, would be nice, wouldn't it?

We shall have to wait and see. Join us right here on this page early doors on Thursday if you can, and if not you can always flick through the results when you do wake up, including the full transcript of Ellie's observations from the Makuhari Messe. Look out for other previews and at least one intriguing interview from the event in the coming days.

MensagemAssunto: Re: Tokyo Game Show 2009   Dom Set 27, 2009 1:57 pm

During an interview today with IGN.com, Suda 51, creator of Killer 7 and Wii's No More Heroes series commented on the status of his latest franchise's future plans with Nintendo. After chatting about the upcoming game No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, we asked him about his previous comment about a possible future of No More Heroes "not on Wii." His responses was as follows:

"I still think that No More Heroes and Wii is a good match, and that for the game we need motion controls, and that's why it works so well on Wii. Even if Travis's story is finished with number two, and we decide to make another No More Heores game within the No More Heroes world or setting I still think that it should be on a Nintendo platform, and more specifically the Wii 2 later down the line. I'm assuming that for the next Wii Nintendo will do more impressive motion controls, and that's what No More Heroes is all about. Right now though we're working on making No More Heroes 2 as strong as can be, so I'm not really thinking about a third game currently."

So while No More Heroes may not see a third game on Wii, Suda seems grounded in his stance that the franchise belongs on Nintendo consoles, and the designer/director is already looking to the future. Will we see a new No More Heroes series after the second game, where apparently Travis's story is set to end? That's all up to sales of the second game, and if Suda has more plans for the franchise next generation. Whatever the case may be, it sounds like all speculation that the series could make its way to 360 or PS3 is now out of the question. No More Heroes started with Nintendo, and it looks like it's here to stay.

It seems every once in a while, a news story will pop up here either confirming that Yakuza 4 is totally coming to the United States or that there's no way in hell Yakuza 4 is coming to the United States.

After seeing the behind-closed-doors TGS presentation, SEGA is the dumbest company on the face of the planet if it doesn't bring this game to the United States.

If you're looking for the story of Yakuza 4, you're in the wrong place. The 15-minute video montage I watched for it today was completely in Japanese, but it did drive home enough of the game's theme, action, and depth to tell you this is the kind of game that will make me learn Japanese if it doesn't come here. Still, keep in mind that I don't know exact details so some of the assumptions below are bound to be wrong.

This is just a fraction of what I saw, and even this is amazing.
Shown mostly in cutscenes, the presentation introduced me to four playable characters -- a big ol' burly dude, a guy wearing a purple jacket, a kid in a tie who seems to be a young police officer, and the white suit wearing guy you've probably seen before. The purple-clad dude seems to be a detective trying to help a woman in a trench coat, the cop kid is just out for justice, the white suit guy appears to be the leader, and the burly man is on a quest for revenge. Somehow, all of these stories intersect for the game.

You get a brief glimpse of it in the trailer above, but the burly guy's story seems to be the most interesting. There's a scene of him overlooking the city and talking to another guy; it looks like he's talking about revenge, and that appears to be driven home by the bag of handguns the other guy gives him. Jump to a ramen shop, and the burly guy walks in loaded with them there guns -- he's got two in his waistband, two in his hands, some tucked in his jacket, and one in his mouth.

Once inside the shop, you can see the rage in his eyes and he lifts the gun and begins unloading. The camera cuts to his point of view as all the people in ramen shop flip out. Then the camera turns to an Old Boy-esque perspective where we're seeing him make his way into the shop from the side so he comes from one side of the screen and the enemies come from another. One guy tries to grab the gun, the burly guy lifts his other hand, and pops the grabbing guy in the gut.

It's a graphic, slow motion move that was simply awesome.

Now, it's worth pointing out here that these scenes seem to be incredibly well done. The action is fluid and looks like a movie at some points in terms of how lifelike the characters are. Sure, there are some angles that let us look in their mouths and that kind pulls you out of the experience, but for the most part I was totally wrapped up in these movies… movies that I couldn't even understand. There's even really well done sound for footsteps and rain.

    That's going to hurt.

Eventually, the video got to some of the brawling in-game action, and that looks just as sweet. There were people getting kicked in the balls before catching a backwards spin kick to the head, big old combos that ended with guys spraying fountains of blood out of their mouths, and even the big guy swinging a motorcycle as a weapon.

If the story and its movie-like presentation weren't getting me going, the fact that this game looks like it had GTA IV beat in stuff to do in an open world does. There was a montage of restaurants you can eat in, items in local shops you can buy, dates you can go on, women you can dress, numbers you can get, and mini-games you can play. I saw darts, grab-claw games, trivia, and ping pong that ended with the ball whacking a scantily clad woman in the chest. Speaking of chests, there's a homerun game where your shots illuminate squares of a board that show a woman in a bathing suit.

Seriously, I wish I had studied Japanese in college just so I could tell you more about Yakuza 4. It looks great and SEGA needs to do whatever needs to be done to make sure we play it in English one day.
